Our Story

Scranton Girls Rock began when several women realized they had all learned life through music, art, and creativity,

yet spent years navigating the industry alone.

Their experiences reflected the larger picture:

in 2024, only 18.9% of songwriters and 5.9% of producers were women,

and women made up 37.7% of charting artists.

Representation was still far behind.

Creativity helped each of us survive those gaps.

It gave us resilience, confidence, identity, and community.

And we knew young people deserved access to those tools much earlier.

Inspired by the Girls Rock Camp Alliance and supported by Orlando Girls Rock, our founding team brought that vision home to Scranton.

We built a space where youth could explore music and creativity with guidance, encouragement, and representation — not pressure or perfection.

What Scranton Girls Rock Is

Scranton Girls Rock is a women-led, community-powered music program where girls, gender-expansive youth, and underrepresented young people can explore the power of music and sound. We teach the human way—through curiosity, expression, experimentation, and connection.

Not perfection. Not pressure.

Just creativity, belonging, and confidence.

Our youth get to:

try instruments

form bands

write music

build communication

get collaboration skills

express themselves

explore who they’re becoming

learn from mentors who genuinely care

Music is our vessel through life <3

Our Code:

We listen.
To ourselves, to each other,

and to the sound we make together.

We try.
Even when we’re nervous.

Especially then.

We include.
Girls, gender-expansive youth, every kid

who needs a place to belong.

We support.
No one stands alone.

Not on stage, not in life.

We create.
Noise, music, messes, ideas, and new paths forward.

We respect.
Ourselves, each other,

and the energy we bring into the room.

We lead.
With kindness, curiosity, and collaboration.

We grow.
Into who we are, who we’re becoming,

and who we never knew we could be.

We rock.
Together — always.

Why We Exist

Every young person deserves a welcoming space

where they feel supported, capable, and represented.

Many girls and gender-expansive youth do not always see themselves reflected in creative or music-centered environments—so we created one.

We want all women and girls, and ultimately everyone, to experience the grounding, joy, confidence, and community that music can offer.

The SGR Vibe

Warm. Welcoming.

Loud in the best way. A little messy.

Exactly how creativity should be.

Scranton Girls Rock feels like a creative home:

a place where young people can experiment,

make noise, express themselves, meet friends,

and build confidence with mentors who believe in them.

There’s structure when needed,

freedom where it matters,

and community in every corner.

We’re here to lift each other up,

and have a ridiculous amount of fun doing it.

Scranton Girls Rock runs on community power.

Our work is made possible by a dedicated team of board members, youth voices, planning committees, and volunteers who show up with heart, creativity, and a shared belief in what’s possible when we lift each other up.

From big-picture planning to behind-the-scenes support, it takes all of us to make this movement sing.
