First Steps
Getting started with Scranton Girls Rock is easy — and the best way to learn what we’re about is to jump in. Whether you want to play, volunteer, support, or just stay connected, here’s how to take your first steps:
1
Reach Out
Send us a quick email (scrantongirlsrock@gmail.com) to introduce yourself! Tell us what interests you — music, art, event support, mentorship, or community outreach. We’ll help you find a way to plug in that feels right for you.
3
Join a Workshop or Training
Take part in our short trainings like the Be There Certificate, Safer Spaces with Shawna Potter, or other creative sessions we offer. These help everyone share a common language of care, creativity, and collaboration.
4
Attend Events,
Spread the Word
Come out to our all-ages shows, fundraisers, and community gatherings — even if you’re new! Just showing up is the first way to feel the SGR vibe and meet amazing people. Follow us on social media, share our posts, and tell your friends. Every shout-out helps grow our community and keeps the music — and the mission — alive.
Helpful Trainings
To really understand what Scranton Girls Rock is all about, we encourage everyone to complete these short trainings and explore the resources we’ve gathered for you. They’ll help you feel connected to our values, know what’s expected, and see how we support one another through creativity, collaboration, and care.
When you’ve finished, celebrate it! Share your certificates online and tag us or use #ScrantonGirlsRock so we can cheer you on. Every post helps grow awareness of what we do and invites others to join in the experience.
SPECIAL NOTE: If you plan on working with campers we will need you to obtain a free background check annually from: https://epatch.pa.gov/TandCVolunteer
and email it to scrantongirlsrock@gmail.com
The Be There Certificate
At Scranton Girls Rock, we believe showing up for others begins with knowing how to listen and respond with care. That’s why our team completes the Be There Certificate — a free, evidence-based mental health training by Jack.org and Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation.
It teaches how to recognize when someone might be struggling and how to offer safe, meaningful support. We encourage everyone in our community — campers, volunteers, parents, and partners — to take the training and help us strengthen our culture of care.

Safer Spaces Training w/ Shawna Potter
We’re honored to host Shawna Potter—frontwoman of War On Women, certified intimacy coordinator, and a leading voice for safer, more inclusive communities—for her signature Safer Spaces Training. Shawna created and facilitates this workshop, drawing from her book Making Spaces Safer and her work with venues, educators, and arts organizations.
She also developed a companion Safer Spaces online course, with instructional design support from SGR president Natalie Jurosky, who helped organize and structure the material as a longtime supporter of Shawna’s work.
The training is $50 and supports Shawna’s ongoing advocacy. If cost is a barrier, email scrantongirlsrock@gmail.com—we can review available resources at that time based on demand.
Explore Shawna’s book Making Spaces Safer on Amazon and join us in creating communities where everyone feels welcome and protected.
Girls Rock Camp Alliance
Scranton Girls Rock is proudly part of the Girls Rock Camp Alliance (GRCA)—a global network of camps and communities using music, art, and collaboration to inspire change. Across Pennsylvania and beyond, programs like ours share ideas, resources, and lessons learned from years of experience.
If you’re running a camp with a similar mission—or dreaming of starting one—let us know! Joining the GRCA connects you with mentorship, shared training, visibility, and a worldwide community of organizers all working to create spaces where everyone can make noise and be heard.
